Placencia is a laid-back little village on the tip of the 16 mile long Placencia Peninsula in the southern part of Belize. It is said to be founded already in the 1600's by English and Portuguese buccaneers.
Today it's a typical Creole fishing village, although tourism is nowadays the number one source of income.
Placencia proudly enjoys a place in the Guinness book of World Records, holding the title for the narrowest main street in the world, the 1 mile long sidewalk that runs through the village. Along the sidewalk you will find a number of small hotels and guesthouses, restaurants, bars and giftshops.
There are several nice resorts in Placencia, all of them located a few miles north of the village.

Fly-fishermen might know of Placencia as the permit capital of the world, and yes this is the place to go for them! You will find the permit on the coral flats and off the mangrove islands.
Tarpon is to be found in the channels and lagoons, and also in the inner mangrove cayes.
The bonefish is cruising along the flats among the outer cayes.
These three "Grand Slam" fish are all year round in Belize. In addition to these favourites there are a variety of other sportfishing species such as: jacks, barracuda, kingfish, tuna, mutton snapper, bonito, wahoo and more.

The easiest way to get here is by plane. Tropic Air and Maya Island Air both have several daily flights connecting Placencia with Belize City, Dangriga and Punta Gorda.
You can also reach Placencia by road. It's dusty and bumpy, but parts of the trip will be quite scenic.
